You have a realistic wellness goal. You've written it down, shared it with someone, used the SMART method (see my Jan 5 Blog "SMART Goals = Healthier You), and you're ready to succeed! Things are going great, you're on track, feeling positive, moving along, and then ... it happens. An unforeseen roadblock, a temptation that is threatening to throw you off course - again . Old, negative thoughts creep in telling you that this goal just isn't meant to be. You're beginning to lose your drive and feeling a bit defeated just when things were going so well. Big sigh. Shoulders slump. Feeling defeated.
I think we can all relate to that scenario on some level. Let's change it! Because that's the OLD way of doing things! I'm going to show you how to set your self up for a successful outcome by planning ahead, so when roadblocks try to impede your progress, you'll have an alternate route, a Plan B!
Planning Ahead. If you really want this goal to happen, then planning is critical. You will need to find a way to effectively handle potential distractions, interruptions, roadblocks - the things that will keep you from attaining your goal. Try using the “if-then” strategy to help achieve any goal. If X happens, then I will do Y. For example, if your goal is eating cleaner by avoiding unhealthy, pre-packaged foods, consider when you may be tempted, what roadblocks you could potentially face.
“If my co-workers offer me unhealthy snacks, then I will politely refuse and eat one of my healthy stacks from home.”
Putting “if-then” into practice:
Write it down. Just as writing your actual goal is important, writing down potential hazards is equally so.
Set your goal. Be determined. Have an effective strategy for successfully handling situations that would otherwise take you off course.
Stay positive. You CAN achieve your goal. There may be some bumps in the road, but you'll be ready. If something unforeseen happens, make an adjustment and continue moving forward. Remember, YOUR wellness is in YOUR hands.
