Many clients tell me the reason they want to work with a health coach is because they don’t feel good in their body any more. They’re living an inactive lifestyle, have gained weight, feel self-conscious, and have experienced low self-esteem. Their desire is to restore their wellness to levels they haven’t experienced in long time. Many express making unhealthy food choices as a main culprit for their current condition. While they know their choices aren’t healthy, they can’t seem to correct it.
What I’ve learned is that it’s not just about the food. However, to be clear, nutrition is a HUGE factor in our wellness and not all calories are created the same. Typically, when a person reaches a state of feeling uncomfortable in their body due to weight gain, sluggishness, brain fog they didn’t get there strictly because of the food. Their food choices are another symptom of something bigger.
It's because all aspects of our lives impact our wellness - how we feel, how we act, the choices we make - it's all connected. When something is out of balance, it can impact how well we choose to care for ourselves. Loss of a loved one, trauma, depression, unhealthy relationships, unfulfilling jobs – can impact how we eat, what we eat, when we eat, why we eat, where we eat. Discovering our wellness imbalances is essential to enhancing wellness.
When a client and I first start working together, I ask them to complete a wellness assessment. It’s a great tool to discover their imbalances may be, as well as for the client to really connect with each aspect of themselves, including understanding their commitment level for making change. A health coach utilizes various tools, such as the wellness assessment, to assist and support clients in determining strategies for successfully enriching their lives.
For me, health coaching is very fulfilling. Not only do I get to assist clients in making positive changes that enhance their wellness, but I also learn a lot along the way! It’s definitely a win-win!
