...keep it simple and real.
Today, I am equipped with more awareness, more knowledge about food additives, preservatives, misleading labels, sketchy marketing tactics, and a plethora of hazardous chemicals. So my grocery cart does NOT contain any of those "convenience foods" any more! When I really started paying closer attention to food labels and ingredients, and learned about the health hazards of the thousands of chemicals and pesticides in processed foods, I felt overwhelmed. I mean, processed food products are everywhere! Honestly, I was a bit freaked out (and with good reason). I was (and still am) horrified by it all. It's a travesty what the FDA allows in our food system! (But that's a story for another blog post.)
There's no turning back though. Once I had this awareness - this knowledge about how the Standard American Diet (SAD) is making us sick (type 2 diabetes, obesity, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer) - I can't unlearn it. I mean, how can I ignore something that threatens my health? I am awakened now to how my food choices impact my health.
When I eliminated highly process, manufactured, packaged foods from my menu and adopted a more plant-based eating style, things changed for me. My skin tone improved, no 3 PM slump, increased energy, no colds/flus, no more headaches, lost some weight. I've noticed that my body responds faster to my weight workouts, too. Best of all, I feel fabulous!!
I like to provide my clients with this awareness, as well. I don't like to freak people out, but it would be unethical to NOT share my knowledge about the hazards of the SAD. Actually, my clients appreciate learning about the toxicity of the Standard American Diet because they can make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
Once you start eating cleaner - eliminating process foods (and thereby eliminating thousands of chemicals) and eating whole foods - you feel better, think clearer, and are healthier overall. You feel so good that there's just no going back to the old way of eating!
In the beginning, it may feel overwhelming as you read through the labels and search for foods that are healthiest. My advice: keep it simple and real. Most of your diet (actually, I prefer "eating style" because diet has a negative connotation) should be plant-based. Think fresh vegetables, dense whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, and water. You can't go wrong. Real food does not have an ingredient list full of 28-letter chemicals. Real food IS the ingredient. It doesn't have artificial flavors, artificial colors, or artificial anything. Real food isn't manufactured. It's grown.
Real foods are nutrient dense - full of the vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that our bodies need to thrive. It has fiber and real flavor from the earth. It has good energy which, in turn, provides the body with good energy.
