A favorite part of yoga for many people is the last ten minutes. This is relaxation time. We lie in Savasana (shah-VAH-sah-nah), also known as 'corpse pose'. The whole body is relaxed onto the floor with an awareness of the chest and abdomen rising and falling with each breath. All parts of the body are scanned for muscular tension of any kind, which is consciously released as it is found.
The best part about savasana is quieting the mind chatter. Mind chatter can make you crazy. It's incessant mind talk: past conversations, mental checklists, concerns, thoughts, ideas, grocery lists - all buzzing around without ceasing. While it will never fully go away, it can be quieted down. And when it's shushed for a few minutes, it is very refreshing and rejuvenating. Savasana is about letting go completely.
Here's one way to quiet the mind chatter and so you can feel refreshed.
You may want to set a timer on your phone for 10-15 minutes. There's a great app for smart phones called: Mindfulness. It allows you to set a meditation timer with a gentle chime to begin and end the session.
Get comfortable & relax:
One you've relaxed the body, begin to focus solely on the breath. Try these breathing variations to help relax and shush the :
Same Duration with Pause
Notice how your body feels.
Notice how your mind feels.
Did you relax?
It can take some practice, but I guarantee that just focusing on the breath for a few minutes is very relaxing and refreshing.
Take time to shush the mind jabber. It's SO worth it!
I think we can all agree that our health and wellness is our most important asset. But what defines 'health and wellness'?
Should you be considered 'well' if you don't have a disease or when you're not experiencing cold/flu symptoms? Are you 'healthy' because you're BMI is within the 'average' range?
The World Health Organization has stated that, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." So being healthy isn't just about our current physical condition, if we have a cold or not. Instead, wellness factors in ALL aspects of life.
There are seven aspect of wellness:
When one or more of these wellness ingredients is out of balance, it will impact other areas of our wellness. For example, having that dreaded job with the tyrannical boss that is just forty hours of stress and anxiety and Fridays at 5:05 can't come soon enough! TGIF! Unfortunately, Sunday night is when the anxiety starts to build up and maybe eating ice cream from the carton will help. Work stress can cause sleepless nights, poor eating habits, excessive drinking, and lower our immune system's ability to help us ward off colds and flu.
Health and wellness is about ALL of life, not just whether you're feeling sick or not. We love when our clients discover where their imbalances are through our wellness tools, because that's when many 'ah-ha' moments take place. The really cool part is that's when they make the connection and really begin replacing the old, worn out habits, with new healthier ones! They lose weight, eat healthier, feel healthier, and can take the appropriate action steps to continue on their wellness path.
